Starting an interesting conversation with someone you’re meeting for the first time can be tough. It could be a new client, employee or a supplier.
In fact, starting a conversation with someone who’ve you’ve met a number of times can be tough!
Well, it doesn’t need to be that way.
You know, one of the things I do when interviewing a guest on my marketing podcast is to start with an unexpected question unrelated to what we’re there to talk about. Usually it’s a fun one, the answer to which will have us smiling … even laughing.
After that, the conversation immediately loosens up, and a better chat follows.
So, here’s 10 of my favourite ice-breaker questions that lead to interesting conversations (and if you want to hear my own answers to these questions then take a listen to this episode of The Small Business Big Marketing Show):
- What’s the best job you’ve ever had?
- What’s on your bucket list?
- What’s one habit you’re trying to get rid of?
- Who’s your hero?
- In terms of value for money, what’s the best product you’ve ever bought?
- What’s the biggest animal you could knock out with one punch?
- If you were to die tomorrow, what little thing would you regret not doing?
- What freaks you out?
- What did you want to be when you grew up?
- What is something you hate doing?
If you feel awkward about asking personal questions, ftry to follow these simple questions to start an interesting conversation.

My question is always about football, being from Melbourne everyone has a team they follow. If you aren’t talking about weather your talking about football, so my question is always “who do you follow in the afl?” I know a lot about football and can have a good conversation about it
That’s a good question for locals, Leanne. Go Hawks!
