Who doesn’t want to live a life on-purpose! Will Davies used to be a mortgage broker. And a successful one at that. He was making plenty of coin and working his own hours. But selling mortgages didn’t light his fire. So he sold his business and created (from scratch) a business that has him jumping out of bed. Every. Single. Day. It’s a purpose-full episode 545 of The (12 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.
A Little More About Car Next Door’s Will Davies …
Righto, let’s meet today’s guest Will Davies who grew then sold (for seven figures) a successful mortgage broking business that paid well, and enabled him to work his own hours, from anywhere. So why’d he sell? Simply because he wasn’t on-purpose. He realised that selling mortgages wasn’t why he was put on this earth. What he was here to do was save the world by having fewer cars on the road. So, he started Car Next Door, an online, peer-to-peer car-sharing service. Today, Car Next Door has 4,000 cars listed, has 180,000 borrowers annually, facilitates 22,000 trips every month and is turning over $30M annually. Not a bad scoreboard! Let’s go and find out how he did it. I started off asking Will what was the most interesting car he’d listed so far.
Timbo’s Top 3 Attention Grabbers
- You may have picked up my love for Will’s decision to create an on-purpose business that 100% aligns with what he stands for.
- I love how he very cleverly used local area marketing to test his prototype and to slowly but surely grow the business in those early days. Having a stand at the local Bondi Farmers Market was genius!
- I love how he utilised a VA in the Philippines to research his potential competitors. Such an inexpensive way to get a read on the competitive landscape.
