Having a discounting pricing strategy is one thing. Making it work and turning it in to an unbelievably successful business is another. That’s what today’s guest, Ashley Wilson of Shiploads discount variety store in Tasmania has done.
I’ve wanted to have the discounting pricing discussion for a while now, so buckle up as we cover plenty of marketing ground including the consumer psychology behind discounting, the optimal discounting pricing strategy, how to build a quality brand that still screams cheap, the importance of a funny business name and so much more.
Plus I answer a question from a listener who’s keen to know how to beef up their resume.
Let’s get stuck right into episode 224 of Australia’s #1 marketing show. Go!

This was like a class in starting a business. Second half of the show was so meaty I needed a fork!
LOLs Nick! What was your biggest takeaway?
Wow. I have to pick ONE? Loved the process for naming the business…if I have to chose. That is such a hard process. I know you love it Tim, but wow, so stressful. But then the way he talked about positioning the business was great. And the detail on the branding. Having a style guide. Very well done. Never heard of a SMALL business going to that detail. But I am guessing they are not too small. But if I am honest, I love the fact that it makes so many other decisions easy. It is just another process, and I am all about process. Great stuff buddy.
If you love naming businesses Tim, I need one 🙂
I’m with Nick, I find it hard.
