  1. Hi Timbo, my biggest aha was the bit about collecting stories for each point you make, also what griffo said about start where the audience is. Next week I’m giving a talk and just planning it right now, and I’m going to start with two snapshots from when food controlled me (or so I thought) then a concrete example of me walking away from the junk. Then the talk is about how to get from one to the other. This is priceless THANKYOU.

    Must disagree on the toastmasters comment you made. I was in toasties for three years and I saw people shaking in their boots turn into really self assured speakers. There is no substitute for the little and often practice this gives people, with supportive feedback. The problem comes when aspiring speakers think TM is ALL they need. There is a definite art to selling from stage so I think the best solution is toasties for general confidence then learn integrity selling from stage elsewhere.

  2. Good stuff. NO KFC IS NOT better than Chic-fil-A. OMG!!! Not even in the same class.

    No that is not my biggest take away though. As you know, I love this stuff. I really want to start speaking…not full time, but would love to find some opportunities. For now, behind the mic will have to do. I too liked what AG had to say about knowing the audience and then using a story (I think this one was you) to find common ground. Story is so important. People won’t always remember what you say, but they will remember how you made them feel. I’m sure I heard that someplace.

    Thought of a new word for you too. Smarketing! Smart marketing. Royalties will be fine. 😉

    Great to hear both you again. Always entertaining and educational. I don’t think it’s weird to walk around a venue and touch each table before you speak. Definitely a good idea to ‘get centred’ while it’s calm, before giving a presentation, if you can get the chance.

  5. Love your take-away, Harriet. Good lick with your talk. We’ll agree to disagree on toasties. That said, I’ve not been through the process, so what would I know?! Although someone (a past toastie) did once tell me I shouldn’t lean on the lectern, or have my hands in my pocket. Meh!!

  6. Hey Nick – check out the Matt Chan video – his TEDx talk on storytelling. He is the producer of Hoarders. The two key elements to capturing an audience are to know your audience and to start with what they know not what you know. I think this is hugely valuable for authors, speakers, trainers, parents etc.

  7. Hi Harriet – I was one of those cool kids that did Toasties at school – when I was 14 I think. Toasties was attended by the chess club kids, the gardening club kids and the sick kids – man we were cool…………..
