Past guest and good friend of mine (and the show) Jules Lund joins us to talk all thing social influencer marketing… What’s a social influencer?
Jules is an Australian TV celebrity turned entrepreneur. He’s appeared as a presenter on travel show Getaway appearing in almost 400 episodes, he has hosted the Logies red carpet arrivals since 2006 and hosted some of Australian radio’s biggest programs. In September 2015 Lund launched TR|BE, a marketplace for social influencers and the brands that need them.

Well, what another great episode. I have heard of TRIBE and contacted them a few months ago. Not sure if it is right for me just yet, but will be paying a close eye on when it can be. Massive thanks to Jules for his passion and as always to Timbo for his podcast G O L D.

Another great show, thank you for continuing to out out so much great content for us all to learn from and enjoy.
There were a couple of questions I had that I thought you would have asked, but never did, although I do know time is limited on the show.
If you do get him back, (or if he reads these comments and is happy to reply back then better still) can you ask, why the name Tribe? I would have thought he would have gone with something more unique that he could dominate the name, not something that is used by a lot of people in the marketing world at the moment, which would mean the SEO aspect would be hard and expensive.
Next question, I assume this would only be for brands that have a product to sell. It wouldn’t be for tradies offering a service, such as a plumber, painter, gardener, right? Becuase you are looking for influencer’s that have used the product or service. And it would be hard to find several different influencers that have all had a plumber round to fix a leaking toilet.
And last question, he has spent a lot of money in the app, and yet, still no android app, why is that, with android being open source I would have thought he would have found more affordable developers that would work on android, then when it was all done, he could get someone to copy it over to Apple. Not that this really affects me at all, but I’m just curious on his thoughts behind it and also curious to see if he has found that he has lost much work because of it, although I’m thinking it would be hard to tell, well unless you have people specially telling you they are not signing up because they don’t have an apple phone.
Anyway, they are just a couple of questions I had about it all.
But all in all, I think it is a great idea, I have heard of other similar but slightly different business models. So I think good on him, and I can only see it going from strength to strength as more people hear about it and of course as more people keep using social media more than ever these days.

Thanks Chris. There’s very little downside to trailing TR|BE and plenty of upside. Maybe give it a go as a secondary marketing play when you have 30-minutes spare to set up a campaign. You never know!

Battens disease, I wonder if jules would like to connect with a friend of mine here in uk who has been working hard to raise money for battens research and had some real success. his daughter au comes very quickly several years ago . since then he has raised a fair amount and has helped move the understanding of it forward. it’s so rare here that little research had been carried out . if that’s of interest get back in touch . Great point. I decided on it years before I launched and admittedly thanks to the brilliance of Seth Godin, it has become increasingly more mainstream. TRIBE always felt strong to me, and bloody hard to find a name you can dominate unless you find a word and add or subtract a letter., which for a tech start-up can look like you’re just copying the trends.

Wrong! Loads of campaigns are companies that provide a service. We also have events too, it doesn’t stop at products. Red Balloon (online experience gift retailer) ran a successful campaign on sharing your favourite red balloon experience- anyone that has used red balloon in the past could submit. Remember these Influencers are content creators, capture their imagination. Ask them to let their tribe know about a promotion coming up. Use humour, make it fun. Think outside the square and you can get a great response.

Mate, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions, really appreciate that buddy.
Did you really think about it before Seth, well there we go, I guess that makes sense then that his book and all the talk about it, has actually been in your favor then.
Its interesting about the whole name thing, we have actually had a fair few discussions about that within Timbos forum. I won’t go through it all here, but my own opinion is I don’t like the ones where they take off a letter or add one, I know it is all hip to do that at the moment, but I’m not that keen on it. I’m of the opinion if the brand is strong enough then it will make a name for itself, regardless what it is called, look at Google or Instagram and many others like them, that you would never know what they do, unless you knew the brand.
But at the same time, I do also like when a name explains what they do. Hence why I have Geelong Cable Locations. Or when a brand uses the name throughout the busienss, and this is what I love about yours the way you talk about the tribe, so even though it is the name of the busienss, you are actually talking about the people within it.
Thanks for clarifying that about the service providers and for the example, that does help explain it a bit better for me.
And it is good to hear Android is coming soon, and yes it is good to get it right on one platform first before you put out there on a second one. I guess I was just blown away by how much you have spent on it so far, that is a lot more than I thought it would have cost, although I am saying that from someone that is not seeing the backend and how much work has gone into it.
Anyway mate, I was serious when I said I think it is a great idea and I reckon you will do really well with it. For now, maybe you might just have to start using your your own tribe of influences to promote yourself as well, so that alot more people hear about it and how it all work 🙂
