250 – Long live the marketing crazies

250 – Long live the marketing crazies

What do a condom marketer, an ex Aussie Rules football legend, the vice-captain of the Australian Soduko team and an engineer turned YouTube star with ADHD have in common? They’re all very clever marketers building solid businesses thanks to some crazy marketing ideas, and they’ve been past guests on this show.

Whilst I’m not one for celebrating milestones – there’s no real value in it for you the listener – I am cognisant of the fact that there’s a huge amount of marketing gold hidden in the archives of The Small Business Big Marketing Show.

With 250 episodes now under my belt, I thought it time that we start to revisit some of those episodes and pull out some of the learnings that you may have forgotten or are yet to hear.

So, that’s exactly what I’ve done. As I strongly believe that all great marketers have to be a little bit crazy, I’ve gone back in to the treasure trove, identified five fellow crazies and grabbed short pieces of my fireside chats with them. Which crazies I here you ask?

Tom Dickson of Will It Blend
AFL legend Warwick Capper
Lloyd Perry of Big Richard Condoms
And Mick Colliss, Vice Captain of the Australian Sudoku team

Yep, it sure to be an interesting show!

Plus, there’s my usual check-in (from Fiji, none less!), and I share a marketing quote that’s well, a little crazy ?

Let’s celebrate episode 250 of Australia’s favourite marketing podcast with a trip down memory lane.

Enjoy!

My Top 3 Learnings from Episode 250 …

  1. To create great marketing you really do need to be a little bit crazy.
  2. To build a business you need to take risks.
  3. Celebrate your sense of humour if you’ve got one. If you haven’t, then find it. It’s point-of-difference in an all too serious world.

Inspirational Marketing Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

  1. Hi Timbo! As a long time listener (all 250 episodes) I wanted to say congratulations on the milestone of 250 amazing shows. I have implemented so much of what I have learnt from your show over the past 3 years and business is going great guns as a result. Huge thankyou to you and your guests for the great insights. I look forward to the next 250 episodes. This is a huge shout out to you mate. Keep up the great work. Luke http://www.surfandsun.com.au

  2. Luke, you’ve been a great supporter over the years and for that I thank you. So glad to hear your business is crushing it. may it continue to do so.

  3. I love the crazies. Capa had to be on this list. I still can’t understand most of what he says…but it still sounds crazy. Did you realize you flipped your sponsor plug at the end, or did you do it on purpose? 99 Designs gets your marketing sorted, and Net registry …. I had to listen to it a few times, kids like a double take.

Congrats on 250. 300 is just around the corner now that you’ll be doing two a week. Nice!

  4. Thanks Nicko. Google Capper and watch a few of his videos. #hilarious Re the sponsor plugs mix up – well, I was on a tropical island! Thanks for all your support and I look forward to celebrating your 300th some time soon ;0)

  5. Love love LOVE the idea of setting a direction, not a goal. My current financial goal of £49,564 gross income for this tax year is at times a lot for me but now it’s a direction I cannot fail, in fact it has made me think of how I can break it down into steps. Starting with a monthly goal of £4,130.. And if that feels too much I just halve it, which is an amount I can easily achieve. Another great uplifting show Timbo 🙂 smiles on the dials all round ha ha ha!

  6. Thanks Harriet … I head in the direction of “pitting smiles on the dials of small business owners”, so it looks like I’ve had some success 🙂 Thanks for sharing and I wish you all the best with your direction. I have no doubt whatsoever that you’ll achieve it.
