246 – How to create a poaint of difference in a crowded market place with Optometrist turned entrepreneur Dr. Robert Zoellner

Discover how to create a point of difference in any market place. It’s easier than you think, thanks to some simple marketing decisions.

Are you hanging out for that time when you’re making so much money that you can start investing in businesses you’re passionate about? Well, that’s exactly where today’s guest is at – he’s a very successful Optometrist trapped in an entrepreneur’s body!

Dr. Robert Zoellner founded and owns two Optometry clinics in Oklahoma employing some 80 staff. He’s doin’ OK! Having now made enough money to “wear a soccer jersey at all times and in all situations”, he’s now enjoying his wealth by starting completely unrelated businesses including a car auction house, a horse ranch, a sleep clinic and an online training business for business owners.

Listen in as he explains how marketing played a huge role in his success from the very start, making him stand out from every other optometrist in his market.

Plus I launch my Marketing Coaching Service, I share an interesting comment an interviewer asked me on radio last week, along with a marketing quote from author and historian Steven Pressfield of The War Of Art fame.

Yep, it’s another big episode to add to The Small Business Big Marketing Show’s archives.

Enjoy!

My Top 3 Marketing Tips from my chat with Dr. Robert Zoellner:

  1. Allocate an amount of money to your marketing that scares you.
Dr. Robert allocated 10% of gross revenues from the start!
  2. Practise delayed gratification.
Instead reinvest your winnings in to something that will generate a return. And put off buying that Mercedes!
  3. Don’t be afraid to front your marketing.
It helps people to get to know you, to become familiar with you, which leads to trust and quite possibly, a sale!

Inspirational Marketing Quote of the Week

“The most pernicious aspect of procrastination is that it can become a habit.
We don’t just put off our lives today; we put them off till our deathbed.

Never forget: this very moment, we can change our lives. There was never a moment,
and there never will be, when we are without the power to alter our destiny. This second
we can turn the table on Resistance.

This second, we can sit down and do our work.”

Steven Pressfield, The War Of Art

  1. Timbo this was a really interesting interview. And yes hearing you speak at our conference emboldened us in getting our own licence. My lovely wife heard the testimonial, and said I sounded like Alfred Hitchcock ! 🙂 More work on the verbal podcast energy levels. Cheers

  2. Thanks Steve. Nothing wrong with sounding like Alfred Hitchcock. Imagined if she’d said Sylvester the Cat! Then you’d have something to worry about ;0)

  3. As a fellow health-care practitioner I was inspired by Dr Robert’s success. I resonated with the idea of having fun in the marketing of health-care businesses. It’s refreshing to see someone like Dr Robert still passionate about business and full of vision after years in health-care. Sadly for many health-care business owners the opposite is true. Thanks gentleman! Brad Beer, Physiotherapist, Author, Founder POGO Physio

  4. Thanks Brad – I think this potential ‘staleness’ can apply to many business owners. We need to keep finding new ways to breathe life in to the way we grow and love our businesses. Otherwise sell, and move on to greener pastures.

  5. What a great chap Dr Robert is. Isn’t it funny that all these successful guys and girls you interview always state the importance of Sales and marketing – funny that!

  6. Loved this interview Timbo! I really loved how he talked about delayed gratification. I talk about this with my boys. I would also like to add that he is really good at finding key employees and figuring out what they do best. Freeing you, the business owner, to do what you are best at.

  7. That last learning, Nick … it’s a ripper. The amount of business owners I come across that are frustrated by their employees is huge. Dr Robert’s way of attracting and keeping the good ones is spot on. And good on you for sharing it with your boys #GreatDad

  8. Hey Timbo, I discovered your podcast at around episode 110. Then I went back to No 1 and have gotten through all of them over time. Keep up the great work inspiring Small Business owners.
Yes. An inspiring interview Timbo. Dr. Z has the right attitude. From the interview you certainly get that the key to his success has been the outrageous but effective 10% gross revenue marketing budget. Huge by any measure.
